Fatehpur Sikri - Dream of a Mughal Emperor
Not
too far from Bharatpur is the Akbar's ghost city-Fatehpur
Sikri. Before entering the city of the Taj, the Palace on
Wheels tour takes you to this city complex, which was once
the capital of the Mughal emperor Akbar.
Built in red stone, Fatehpur Sikri is famous for its architectural
brilliance. The city, now a Unesco world heritage site was
built by Akbar between 1571 and 1584. The city complex is
a perfect blend of the Hindu and Mughal style of architecture.
Some of the design of columns, brackets and arches are inspired
from the architecture style of Rajasthan and Gujarat. The
city was built over a period of 15 years.
Some of the beautiful buildings at the complex are the Diwan-I-Aam,
or the hall of public audience and Diwan-I-Khas or the hall
of private audience. Diwan-I-Am was the place used to preside
over the court while Diwan-I-Khas was used to held serious
discussion on religion and other important issues by the King.
Some other important tourist spots in Fatehpur Sikri are
Panch Mahal, Jami Masjid, Buland Darwaza and the tomb of saint
Salim Chisti.
